POKER DICTIONARY
We at POKERKRIB have put together this page in alphabetical order to try and simplify for all budding Poker players.
ACTION- Getting involved with the betting and gambling. ADD ON- In some tournements after around an hours play you will get the chance to add to your chips, usually around the same number of chips you recieved at the start of play, you will however have to pay for them. All tournements that have a add on will state this at the entry point. ADVERTISING- To mislead other players in to thinking you are playing Tight or Loose by showing you hole cards at certain times to give your opponents the impression you are playing Tight or Loose. AGGRESSIVE- To constantly raise your fellow players rather than just check or call. ALL IN- To move all your chips in to the pot by stating " I am ALL IN " AMERICAN AIRLINES/BULLETS- Two names for the same hand pre flop which is A-A. ANTE- Amount of chips or cash every player puts in pre-flop, not all tournements have Ante's again this will be stated before play comences. ATM- A player who plays so loose he just dishes his money out to anyone that calls his bets. BACK DOOR- Hitting two running cards to make a big hand. BAD BEAT- When you have a very good hand but get beaten by an opponent or an unlucky turn of events in your hand. BAD BEAT STORY- Someone who tells you a story of a bad beat they experienced, maybe several times over. BANKROLL- Amount of money you are willing to play with, a term mainly used in cash games. BELLY BUSTER- When you have a straight draw and hit the card, for examle when you have 4,5,7 an 8 then you hit a 6 to make your straight. (also known as a GUTSHOT or a INSIDE STRAIGHT DRAW). BET- When you are the first player to make a move in a round of betting you either Bet or Check. BIG BLIND- The largest amount of the two blinds, the starting bets in the first round of betting. BIG MONEY STREETS- Used in Limit Poker when bets are doubled in the betting rounds. BIG SLICK- When you hold ACE KING in your hole cards. BLUFF- To deceive players in to thinking you have a better hand than you actually hold. BOARD- The Community Cards, the cards on the table face up. BOAT/FULL BOAT - A Full house (see hand rankings). BROADWAY- A Ace high straight (also see hand rankings). BUBBLE- The position that is one out of the prizes, so say if 20 places get paid and you have come 21st thats the Bubble, not a nice place to be at all. BUILDING A POT- To raise a pot in order to increase the size. BURN- The dealer will Burn the top card before they deal the Flop, Turn and River. BUSTED- To go out of a tournement or lose all your cash in a cash game. BUTTON- Where the Dealer Button is set so the last person to act in a round of betting. BUY ANOTHER CARD- To call a bet in order to see the next card. BUY IN- The cost to play a poker tournement. Or the amount of money you sit down with at a cash game. CALL- To match a bet made by an opponent. CALLING SOMEONE DOWN- To keep calling another players bets as you feel you have a better hand. CALLING STATION- A loose player that just seems to call every bet. CAP- Mainly used in Limit games, to cap the amount a player can bet/raise. CASH IN- To cash in your chips in a cash game CASHED- To place in a tournement where cash is awarded. CATCHING A CARD- Often known as to "Hit", to catch a card needed to make a big hand or win the pot. CHASING- To constantly chase cards that you have very little chance of hitting. CHECK- Not to bet in a round of betting where the players before you have not bet, you simply Check or as most plyers do just tap the table twice. CHECK RAISE- To check and hope someone else bets then when it comes back to you, you then "Raise" their bet. This move is a great poker move widely used by good players. CHIPS- Little round discs with different values rather than cash. CHIP AND A CHAIR- This is used when a player is very low on chips. COLD- When you can not seem to hit a card or you have not seen any good hole cards for some time. COLD CALL- Calling big bets when not investing any money in the pot previously. COMMUNITY CARDS- The 5 cards that are face up on the board to make up the Flop, Turn and River. CONTINUATION BET- When a player has raised in a round of betting and then bets or raises in the next round of betting to show strength. COWBOY'S- A pair of Kings you hold in your hole cards (see PokerKrib's logo). DEAD MONEY- Players you may consider not to have any chance of winning a tournement so they are giving their money to the pot. DEAL- To deal the hole cards and the community cards when it is your turn(unless you have a designated dealer as most tournements have their own dealers). DEALER- A paid dealer to deal the cards at a table, in this case the Dealer Button still moves around the table accordingly. DEALERS CHOICE- When stated a game in which the dealer chooses the hand in which the player is designated dealer, such as No Limit, Limit Razz ect ect... DEUCE/DUECES- A Two/A Pair of Two's. or Ducks as they are also known. DEVILS ADVOCATE- When a player hits three (trip) sixes. DOG- Short for a Underdog. DOLLY PARTON- When a player holds a NINE and a FIVE (Working nine till five). DONKEY- A very, very poor player. DOUBLE UP- To double your amount of chips or cash. DOWN CARDS- One of many terms used for the Hole cards, the two cards a players recieves face down. DRAW- When a player is only needing one card to make a good hand. Usually a player would be on a Straight Draw or Flush Draw. DRAWING DEAD- When a player has no chace of making his hand any better no matter what cards come out. DRY ACES- Just a pair of Aces and no other draws. DUCKS- Pokect two's (Dueces) when holdin 2-2 in your hole cards. EARLY POSITION- The first three players left of the Dealer. EVEN MONEY- When a player has roughly %50 chance of winning a pot. FAST- A player who play's loose and aggressive with lots of bets and raising during a hand. FIFTH STREET- In other terms, the River card, the fifth and final community card to be dealt face up. FINAL TABLE- The last and final table at a tournement usually consists of about 8,9 or ten players. FISH- No one likes a Fish, a player who will stay in pots in the hope of hitting something when the odds are stacked against him. FLUSH- Any five cards of the same suit (see hand rankings). FLUSH DRAW- When a player needs only one card to make a flush. FOLD- To throw your cards away or to pass as otherwise known when you wish to be out of a pot. FOLD EQUITY- When a player makes a big bet and raises the chances of the other players folding rather than staying in the pot. FOUR OF A KIND- Four cards of the same value ex- four kings (see hand rankings). FOURTH STREET- Or the Turn as it's mainly known, the fourth card to be dealt in the community cards face down on the board. FREEROLL- Only really used on the internet, this is a free entry tournement usually with low cash prizes. FREE CARD- When all players have checked in a round of betting allowing the next community card to be dealt without a bet. GAME THEORY- A players tactics for a tournement. GUTSHOT- Also know as Bellybuster, inside Straight draw. waiting for a middle card, you may hold 2,3,4 and a 6 so you need a 5 to make your straight. HEADS UP- When only two players remain in a game, or a game with only two players involved. HIGH ROLLER- A high stakes player, basically someone who plays for a lot of money. HIGH STAKES- Games that involve a lot of money and very high blinds usually starting at around £50/$75. HIT- To hit a card that makes your hand a whole lot better. HOLD 'EM- The most popular poker game played around the globe (see hold'em rules). HOME GAME- A poker game usually made up of friends played at a players house. HOLE CARDS- A players two cards he recieves face down without other players seeing them. HOOKS- Pocket Jacks when a player has Jack Jack in the hole cards. H.O.R.S.E- A style of poker where you play five different games for the same length of time or money, HOLD 'EM, OMAHA, RAZZ, SEVEN CARD STUD and SEVEN CARD STUD HI-LOW 8's OR BETTER, The E in horse is for Eights. HOUSE- The club or casino in which you are playing at. IMPLIED ODDS- Odds a player factors in his calculation of pot odds to account for being called if you complete your hand. INSIDE STRAIGHT- See BellyBuster or Gutshot. IN THE DARK- To play your hand without looking at your hole cards. IN THE MONEY- Getting in the payout places in a tournement. KICKER- Highest card you have to go with your pair or trips ect to make you 5 card hand. LADIES- A pair of Queens. LATE POSITION- The player on the button and the two players to his right is usually regarded as a late position. LAY DOWN- To fold or pass. LIMIT POKER- The reverse of No Limit, in Limit the bets are set beforehand so they can not go over that amount. LIMP IN- To call the big blind bet and not raise in the first round of betting. LOOSE- A player that play's far too many hands and is likely to lose a lot of chips. LOW STAKES- Poker that is played with low blinds usually a cash game with say £1/$2 blinds. MARGINAL PLAY- A week hand that is better of not playing at all. MID POSITION- On a full table mid position would be seats 5,6,7, between the blinds and the dealer. MTT- Multi Table Tournement, a poker game that involves many palyers and tables. MUCK- To muck is to fold or discard your hand at the end round of betting and not showing your defeated cards. MULTI WAY POT- A hand where there are many players involved. NO LIMIT HOLD 'EM- A poker game that has no limits and players can bet what they want at any given time. NUTS OR NUT- The best hand possible given what the community cards have revealed to what a player is holding, having a nut flush would consist of a ace high flush, so no other flush can beat you. ODDS- Percentage a player has of winning a hand. OFF SUIT- Hole cards that are different suits, you may have Ace King Off Suit like Ace of Clubs King of Hearts. OMAHA- Poker where players are dealt four cards face down and five community cards face up, players must use two cards from their four hole cards and three cards from the comminty cards. OPEN ENDED STRAIGHT DRAW- Where a player can hit two different sets of cards thay are drawing on, for instance if a player has 4,5,6,7 he can hit either a 3 or a 8 to make the straight. OUTS- Number of cards a player can hit to better their hand, if you require a ten then you have four outt, yet if you reqiure a queen and you have one already you have three outs. OVERCARD- A card that is on the board which is higher to the pair you already have. OVERPAIR- A Pocket pair that is higher than the community cards that have been dealt, say if the board is Q, 3, 10 and some is holding pocket Kings (pair of kings) this is regarded as an overpair. PAINT- Paint is any face card such as any Jack Queen or King. PAIR- Two cards of the same value. (see hand rankings). PASSIVE- A player that just checks and calls and rarely bets or raises. POCKET PAIR- Two cards in the hole cards of the same value. POCKET ROCKETS- Another term for Ace Ace in your hole cards. POSITION- Where a player is seated rlative to the Button. see Early, Middle and Late Position. POT- The amount of Chips/Cash in the middle of the table during a hand. POT LIMIT- A version of poker where a bet has the maimum value of what is in the pot. POT ODDS- Odds of the pot divided by the cost of calling a pot. PRESTO- When your hole cards are 5-5 (pocket fives). PROTECT YOUR HAND- When you have a good hand and bet large amounts to stop other players from hitting better hands. QUADS- Four cards of the same value such as Nine,Nine,Nine,Nine. see hand rankings. RAG- A poor or unplayable card you have in your hole cards. RAINBOW- When the flop comes with three different suited cards. RAISE- To increase the size of a bet made by a fellow player at the table. RAKE- A percentage of a cash game pot the House will take from each hand. Different Casino's and House's have different set rake's for different games depending on the blinds and limits. RAZZ- A name for Seven Card Low. READ- To make a Read on a opponent by trying to figure what cards they have or hit ect... REBUY- In some tournements you can rebuy the original amount of chips if you lose all your chips, usually this happens only for the first hour in a Rebuy tournement. REPRESENT- To make out you have a hand you don't by betting at certain times when certain cards come out. RERAISE- To Raise a players original Raise in the same betting round. RESPECT- To respect a bet or a raise from an opponent believing they hold a good hand. RIVER- The fifth and final community card to be dealt on the board. ROCK- A player that you should respect, a tough competitor who usually know's when he is winning or losing. ROYAL FLUSH- Number one hand in Hold 'em, a run from Ten to Ace and the same suit (see hand rankings). RUSH- To be winning many hands in a short period of time. SATELLITE- An event where players can qualify for Bigger Events. SEMI BLUFF- When a player bets or raises with nothing or something not that great but a hand that has the potential to end up being a great hand and taking the pot down. SET- Three of a kind, three cards of the same value (see hand rankings). SIT AND GO- A one table tournement mainly played on the internet. SHORT HANDED- When a tournement has only a few players left, say 4,5,6, players. SHORT STACK- The player in a tournement with the least amount of chips. or less than the average stack. SHOWDOWN- Where there are two players remaining in a hand on the last round of betting and both (or more) must show their cards face up. SIXTH STREET- The sixth card dealt in STUD games only. SLIDER- A player who frequently moves all his chips in to the pot. SLOW PLAYING- Betting little amounts when holding a strong hand to try to trap other players. WARNING, Players could end up hitting a better hand. SLOW ROLLING- Refrain from doing this, it is considered bad etiquette when playing poker, Slowrolling is when betting has finished and a player shows his cards and the other player who is holding the winning hand waits before showing his hand even though he knows he has the winning hand. SMALL BLIND- The player sitting between the Dealer and The Big Blind will post the required Small Blind (see rules). SMOOTH CALLING- Calling other players bet's instead of raising when you have a big hand, pretty similar to Slow Playing. SOLID- To play very conservative, only playing with strong hands, a Solid player will get respect from observant players. SPLIT POT- When players have the same value hand at the end of betting the pot will be split amongst the winning players. STACK- The amount of chips a player has in front of them. STEALING- When you do not hold a great hand yourself but realise your opponent(s) are holding weak hands or showing weakness, you bet or raise to make them fold and take the pot. STEAL THE BLINDS- Often used in late position if no player has bet in front of them they will raise the blinds in a attempt to tkae the blinds. STRAIGHT- Running 5 cards of different suits(see hand rankings). STRAIGHT DRAW- When a player is waiting for a card (or 2) to make a straight. STRAIGHT FLUSH- Running 5 cards of the same suit example 7,8,9,10,jack all clubs. (see hand rankings). SUITED- Hole cards that both have the same suit like Ace of Hearts and Queen of Hearts. SUITED CONNECTORS- Hole cards that are the same suit and run together like 6 of clubs and 7 of clubs or Ten of spades and Jack of spades and so on. TABLE IMAGE- The way fellow players will judge you and the way you play. Giving a false Table Image can give you an advantage in certain play's. TAKE DOWN- To win a pot. TELL- A player may do something in a certain hand that you realised he did previously giving you a Tell the next time they do this, gaining several Tells on players can gain you an advantge. Be carefull of a false Table Image from other players. THREE OF A KIND- Trips, three cards of the same value(see hand rankings). TIGHT- When a players play's few hands usually only big hands. TILT- When a player loses a big pot with a big hand he thought he would win, will then start playing lots of hands and play Loose, losing lots of pots. Stay emotionally balanced DO NOT TILT. TRAP- Basically to slow play your good hand by making your opponents feel you have a weak hand and they continue to bet or raise then you show a great hand and take the pot. TREY'S- Pocket Three's, when your hole cards are Three, Three. TRIP'S- Three of a kind (see hand rankings) TURN- Otherwise known as Fourth Street, the fourth community card to be dealt on the board face up from the Dealer. UNDER BET- A bet that is considerably smaller than the pot, say a bet of 100 in to a pot of 800. UNDERPAIR- The pair you hold will be cards smaller to those that have been dealt on the board, you could be holding say, Three Three, and the board has been dealt 5,8,10. UNDER THE GUN- The position directly left of the Big Blind. VALUE BETTING- A hand where you feel you won't be beaten so you bet a decent amount thinking you may get a caller but if you do not get a caller you are happy to take the pot. ZONE- To be in a place where everything is going right and your reads and tells are perfect. Basically everything you are doing is going right for you. |
